Stock Control with WP E-Commerce

June 30, 2009 ·

The WP E-Commerce Plugin allows you to set numbers of stock for any product listed in your shop. The system will then count down each time an order is placed until you are out of stock or you can set the stock to 0 yourself when you have run out.

Once this happens, the Add to Cart button beside that item disappears and is replaced with a message stating “This item has sold out”. As soon as you are ready, you untick the limited stock box and you are ready to go again.

How to Limit Stock Numbers

How it Looks in Your Shop

Another bonus is that your product is still visible in the shop so is still being promoted but can’t be ordered. If you prefer to take your product out of the shop temporarily when you run out of stock, just untick the category box at the top of the listing and without an assigned category, the item will no longer appear on your live website. You could also consider adding text and an email link to the product details section for people who want to be notified when the product is back in stock.

The stock control function is also perfect for people using WP E-Commerce for event registrations with limited places available. I will be writing more about using WordPress for events in more detail soon, so keep an eye on my blog.

    Hi Simona,
Click on variations under E-Commerce in your sidebar. Creat e a new variation called Colour with Black and Green as the 2 options. Go back to edit your bag product – Click the variations section, select the colours variartion and make sure both colours are ticked. Add 4 in the box in front of each colour. You also need to tick the checkbox under shipping which says you have limited stock of that item.

Some of my products are saying “This product has sold out.” when in fact they have not. If I have a product with variations Small, Medium, and Large with set numbers of stock at 4 of each, it will still give this message. Any suggestions?

Is it possible to set a product count for each product? I cannot figure this out. When I tick the box that I have a limited stock of that product, I would like to display the number of items in my stock. For example, if I tick the limited box and write that I have 2 items, I would like the text “I only have [number] (in that case 2) items in stock” to appear near my “Add to cart” button. Is it possible?

    Mike,
I’m not sure if this is possible without altering the plugin code. You need to ask at the wp e-commerce forum.
