Integrating WordPress & Twitter
February 26, 2010 ·
To keep your website really fresh and your readers/followers up to date, use the Twitter Tools Plugin to completely integrate your WordPress blog and your Twitter account.
Some of the best features of Twitter Tools are:
- New blog posts automatically tweeted on your twitter account
- Add your latest tweets to your website sidebar or a page of your choice
- Automatic weekly digest post of all your tweets
- Send tweets to your Twitter account from inside WordPress

Create a Latest Tweets Page
Once twitter tools is activated and your Twitter account details are entered on the settings page, show your latest 5 tweets on any page or post on your WordPress website (like mine above) just add this code where you want the tweets to display. Just change the 5 to show a different number of tweets.
Send Blog Posts to Twitter Automatically
Once you’ve uploaded and activated the Twitter Tools plugin, go to the Twitter Tools page under Settings. Add your Twitter username and password, then select ‘yes’ from the first drop down box and change the prefix if you like. You can either set the second drop-down box to send by default when you publish a new post or leave as ‘No’ and use the twitter tools box under your categories on each post you create. See screenshot below…
You can also activate a short url service from your settings page so your blog post links are automatically shortened.
Tweet from Inside WordPress
One of the best things about this feature is that if you activate it, anyone who is setup to publish posts on your website can also send tweets to your Twitter account. If you have multiple blog contributors or staff who contribute to your website, they can easily add tweets too.
This follows the WordPress user levels…
Subscribers, Contributors can’t post to Twitter.
Authors, Editors and Administrators can post to Twitter.

Get a free account with http://bit.ly/ and add details to your Twitter Tools Settings to automatically shorten web links in your tweets. You can then login to http://bit.ly/ and check how many people clicked on your link from Twitter.
Note that your automatic tweet about your new blog post wont show up in your sidebar or Latest Tweets page. Twitter Tools has this covered so you wont show double ups.
